Coup de blues

Coup de Blues is a trio from Marseilles, southern France, derived from a band formed in 1994. It consists of Philippe (guitar/harp/vocals), Vincent (bass/guitar/vocals) and Jean-Damien (drums/background vocals). Its name takes advantage of the carelessness of the guardians of the integrity of the french language, as the french idiom "avoir un coup de cafard" (literally "to have a cockroach blow" - to be down, to have the blues) has been years ago updated to "avoir un coup de blues". As this name supposes, the band offers a music deeply anchored in the afro-american tradition by covering/adapting blues classics and lesser known pieces.

The main stylistic influences to be found in its music are post-war Chicago blues, southern boogie and funk-blues from the seventies. This variety, along with the various instrumental configurations (the classic guitar/bass/drums - electric and acoustic -, the unusual harp/bass/drums and Hound Dog Taylor's two guitars/drums) allows for a wide range of atmospheres. Coup de Blues ain't no "Power Trio", but well thought arrangements let them sound like a ten-pieces band.

The members of Coup de Blues are long-distance runners. Experience showed that they'd rather play without breaks, without set list, and the longest they can ! They consider blues to be a party music that needs interaction with the audience, and they don't spare energy on the scene, throwing the towel only when the audience has had one's fill and won't follow anymore.
